This is a popular question. The most practical answer is whichever sunscreen you like best in consistency, texture, odor, and overall wearability that you are willing to apply is the best sunscreen to use. It doesn’t matter which sunscreen is the best if you don’t like any of the above characteristics because you will never use it. Ask your Dermatologist for samples of different sunscreens to try (we usually have a few), and see what you like. Try different sunscreens at the store or from your friends. Generic store-brand sunscreens work well, and often they are identical to the more expensive branded sunscreens. Read the ingredients on the label, both the active ones and the inactive ones when you compare them side by side. You will find that they are nearly identical, if not identical. If you are concerned about using chemical sunscreens, look for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc or zinc and titanium. Mineral-based sunscreens work immediately, while chemical-based sunscreens take about 20 minutes to become effective. If you are looking for a tinted sunscreen, often used on the face, these usually have iron oxides which provide the tinting. Iron oxides are safe and provide additional protection against visible light.
